A recent article in the Edmonton Journal (May 25, 2018; “Study of older Canadians dispels ‘gloom and doom’: researcher”) implied that having the highest provincial incidence of licensed driver and annual income for those between 45 and 85, determines better ageing. Hmmmm….let’s think about that. Are these really the indicators we want to measure the quality of our life course? Likely the indicators that will be considered when policies are made? Let’s hope that the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging will reveal richer data. They do claim to have intentions to reveal trends that contribute to healthy ageing: “ the study is a way to improve ageing across the country and promote what it means to age well”. I found it a bit more realistic and hopeful than investing in a magic pill that will target our genetic defects allowing us to longer and healthier (please refer to previous blog entry).
